New Partnership in Defense Technology
Defense technology company Anduril has formed a partnership with a firm based in the United Arab Emirates to develop an autonomous aerial vehicle intended for both military and commercial applications.
The Omen is an uncrewed craft designed for electric vertical take-off and landing, capable of launching without specialized infrastructure, as stated by Anduril.
This aircraft features a “tailsitter” design, allowing it to take off vertically from its own structure before transitioning to forward flight using wings. Development of the Omen began in 2019.
EDGE, the UAE-based partner of Anduril, plans to manufacture the first 50 units locally, with full-scale production expected to commence by the end of 2028.
The collaboration aims to enhance the long-standing defense relationship between the United States and the UAE. EDGE will provide Anduril with regional expertise and established trust throughout the Middle East.
H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, chairman of EDGE Group, remarked that this strategic partnership allows EDGE to leverage advanced autonomous systems engineering capabilities. He emphasized that embedding such technology within the UAE accelerates innovation and development of next-generation systems.
The Omen platform will utilize an electric powertrain developed by Archer Aviation. This California-based aerospace company has conducted significant testing for its “Midnight” air-taxi project in the UAE.
The Midnight platform may be utilized during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as well. The Omen is notable for being the first aircraft equipped with Archer’s proprietary powertrain, which is manufactured in the United States.
Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer, noted that their agreement with Anduril marks just the beginning of potential collaborations. He highlighted that defense contracts provide opportunities for companies like Archer to diversify their revenue while navigating regulatory processes associated with commercial aviation.
The initial batch of 50 Omen systems will be acquired by the UAE from a local production facility. Designed for deployment by a two-person team, Omen can perform various missions including maritime surveillance, logistics support, communications relay, and air defense operations. Experts believe vertical take-off and landing vehicles are essential for future conflicts in regions like the Pacific due to their rapid deployment capabilities over numerous undeveloped islands.
Anduril’s founder Palmer Luckey described how Omen can carry both fixed payloads or retractable gimbals on board. He acknowledged that developing a tailsitter design presents significant challenges but referred to it as a “mirage of optimal military aircraft.” The latest version has yet to undergo flight testing with its new powertrain unit.
