Climber Postpones Tower Climb Due to Weather

Alex Honnold has delayed his attempt to scale the 1,667-foot-tall Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan due to inclement weather conditions.

Netflix is set to broadcast his climb as “Skyscraper Live” starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday. The seasoned climber aims to ascend the tower using free solo climbing techniques, which means he will not use any protective gear or ropes.

The event was initially planned for a live stream on Friday, coinciding with Saturday in Taiwan. Netflix emphasized that safety is their primary concern and expressed gratitude for viewers’ understanding via social media.

In a recent update, Honnold shared a video showcasing the rainy conditions in Taipei, stating, “Sadly it’s raining in Taipei right now so I don’t get to go climbing today. But I’ve been really touched by all the support and well wishes from folks.”

The Taipei 101 tower boasts numerous floors and ranks as the world’s 11th tallest building according to the Council on Vertical Urbanism’s Skyscraper Center.

In 2004, Alain Robert also ascended the Taipei 101 but utilized safety ropes during his climb. Honnold is renowned for his daring climbs, including his famous ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without any safety net, which was documented in the Oscar-winning film “Free Solo.”
