Free Access to College GameDay
ESPN’s popular college football pregame show, College GameDay, was available for free on the ESPN app and via the X account of host Pat McAfee for the second consecutive week this Saturday.
In a statement posted on X, ESPN’s public relations team noted, “As we continue to work on reaching a fair resolution with YouTube TV so they can restore our networks, this week College GameDay will be available, once again, to all fans on the ESPN App with no subscription or authentication needed.”
Pat McAfee also shared the full stream along with several clips from this week’s episode, which was filmed at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The episode featured guest picker and NFL star Patrick Mahomes, who is also an alumnus of Texas Tech.
Since October 30, YouTube TV customers have been unable to access ESPN and other Disney-owned channels such as ABC and National Geographic. This disruption occurred when the previous agreement between Disney and YouTube TV expired.
YouTube TV informed Reuters that Disney is seeking higher payments for content and live sports compared to other distributors like DirecTV and Charter Communications. Disney argues that YouTube TV is attempting to leverage its position as the largest internet TV provider in the U.S. to secure better terms.
A memo from high-ranking Disney executives, including ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, emphasized their commitment to investing in top talent and content. They stated, “We cannot allow anyone to undercut our ability to do so… YouTube TV continues to insist on receiving preferential terms that are below market and has made few concessions.”
This year, YouTube TV successfully negotiated agreements with CBS parent Paramount, NBCUniversal, and Fox after initially reaching short-term extensions before prior deals expired.
