Tragic Incident In Stewartsville

An Ohio woman known for her dedication to rescuing injured deer was tragically killed by a male deer in an enclosure at her home.

Jodi Proger, 64, became trapped in a pen with the deer at her residence in Stewartsville, located 70 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, on Saturday, according to the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office.

Ms. Proger’s family attempted to intervene and stop the deer before it could reach her but were unsuccessful.

The animal was ultimately shot by deputies who arrived on the scene at 10:27 p.m. The sheriff’s office has not disclosed what might have triggered the attack.

Ms. Proger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources regarding her death.

“The victim and her husband had the necessary permits for keeping deer on private property. Despite immediate efforts, Mrs. Proger had already succumbed to her injuries. This appears to be an unfortunate and isolated incident,” stated Belmont County Coroner Amanda Fisher.

According to her obituary, Ms. Proger was a wildlife advocate who dedicated over a decade of her life to working with animals.
