Recent Surge in Violence

Four homicides occurred in the District on Saturday, marking the third consecutive weekend of increased violence in the city.

The tragic events included three shootings and one stabbing, following previous weekends where juveniles faced off against National Guard troops at Navy Yard, and numerous individuals were injured in various shootings across Washington, D.C.

The violent incidents unfolded within a grim six-hour timeframe on Saturday. As of now, Metropolitan Police have not made any arrests related to these killings.

The first shooting was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 1900 block of C Street SE. Officers discovered a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Later that day, another teenage boy was found dead around 7 p.m. in the 700 block of Newton Place NW. Authorities did not disclose his age but noted he had suffered a single gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered near him as detectives continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The fatal stabbing and final shooting occurred within a mere 15 minutes of each other in Southeast D.C. Police responded to reports of a stabbing around 8:35 p.m. on Morris Road SE, where they found an unidentified man with multiple stab wounds; he later died at the hospital.

Shortly after, at approximately 8:50 p.m., officers arrived at the scene of another shooting on 14th Place SE, where a woman was shot multiple times and pronounced dead on site.

This recent uptick in violence is part of an alarming trend for the District. On Halloween night, several altercations broke out among juveniles at Navy Yard, prompting police intervention as National Guard troops attempted to restore order amidst chaotic scenes captured on viral videos.

In response to these incidents, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reinstated a temporary citywide juvenile curfew after several teenagers were detained for resisting arrest and drug-related offenses during those disturbances.

A week prior to this weekend’s violence, twelve individuals were injured across multiple shootings throughout D.C., including a mass shooting during Howard University’s homecoming event that left five people wounded.

This wave of violent weekends follows President Trump’s initiation of a crime crackdown nearly three months ago that involved deploying hundreds of federal agents alongside over 2,000 National Guard troops throughout high-traffic areas in the city.

While violent crime has reportedly decreased by 29% compared to last year according to police data, recent events raise concerns about public safety moving forward.
