A Vietnam veteran’s brave confrontation
A Vietnam veteran is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in the Los Angeles area following a violent encounter with an intruder who attacked him while naked.
George Karkoc recounted that the deadly altercation began when the assailant, whose name has not been disclosed by authorities, invaded two apartments in Studio City that were occupied by female residents.
According to police reports, surveillance footage captured a man in his 30s parking his vehicle, stripping off his clothes, and wandering the streets while speaking incoherently in Spanish.
Upon hearing screams from one of the women’s apartments, Mr. Karkoc felt compelled to intervene. “I just thought, ‘I need to get aggressive,’ so I ran into the house and got my gun,” said the 79-year-old veteran during an interview.
The woman managed to escape from her attacker just as Mr. Karkoc confronted him directly.
Mr. Karkoc attempted to de-escalate the situation; however, the intruder charged at him and threw him to the ground. The veteran sustained fractures to both ankles and his hip during this attack.
As the assailant continued his assault on Mr. Karkoc, he felt he had no choice but to fire his weapon. “I pressed the gun against him and I fired,” he explained. “Fired three times and the last shot … I made sure I was going to kill him.” The police confirmed that the attacker died at the scene.
Emergency responders transported Mr. Karkoc to a hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition but has since stabilized. He faces a lengthy recovery period ahead.
A GoFundMe page has been established by Mr. Karkoc’s family to assist with medical expenses and provide support for both women affected by this incident. Additionally, funds will help care for Mr. Karkoc’s wife, who suffers from late-stage Parkinson’s disease.
The Los Angeles Police Department plans to visit Mr. Karkoc on Veterans Day as a gesture of gratitude for his service and bravery during this harrowing event.
Despite his injuries, Mr. Karkoc finds solace in knowing that he acted heroically: “This incident, although horrible, brought me a great feeling that I was able to do something to protect other people,” he stated.
