Roblox’s New Age Verification Measures
Gaming platform Roblox is rolling out a new system for age verification that includes facial recognition technology and chat restrictions based on age.
Users will have two methods to confirm their age: through traditional ID verification or by utilizing the platform’s innovative facial estimation tool.
The process involves the user’s device camera capturing an image of them looking straight ahead and turning their head from side to side, which helps estimate their age.
According to Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman, this facial recognition method is generally accurate within one to two years for users aged 5 to 25.
The new age verification policy will be voluntary starting Tuesday. However, it will become mandatory in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands by December, with a global rollout expected by January.
Roblox CEO David Baszucki assured CBS News that any photos taken for age verification will be automatically deleted after processing.
Once a user’s age is verified, they will only be able to communicate with others who are above or below certain ages. This measure aims to create a safer environment for users.
The platform will also restrict access to content labeled for users aged 18 and older based on the verified age of the user.
Kaufman emphasized that Roblox is dedicated to providing over 150 million users with a safe and positive experience. By implementing these facial checks for chat features, they aim to foster an environment suitable for all ages.
The company has previously faced legal scrutiny regarding its ability to protect children from predators and harmful individuals on its platform.
