FBI Thwarts Planned Attack
The FBI has successfully averted a possible terrorist attack linked to the Islamic State on New Year’s Eve in North Carolina.
Christian Sturdivant, an 18-year-old from Mint Hill, near Charlotte, was apprehended while allegedly plotting to carry out attacks at a grocery store and a fast food restaurant.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Russ Ferguson, announced that Sturdivant faces charges for attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization during a press briefing on Friday.
The FBI Director, Kash Patel, indicated that the suspect was “allegedly inspired by ISIS,” emphasizing that the operation likely saved lives.
In mid-December, authorities received tips about an individual making social media posts endorsing ISIS and extremist views. The FBI identified Sturdivant as the source of these posts, which included an image depicting two miniature figurines of Jesus alongside text stating, “May Allah curse the cross worshipers.”
The arrest affidavit revealed that Sturdivant had been planning the attack for over a year and was not intending to act alone. He had been communicating with an undercover agent whom he believed was affiliated with ISIS.
Sturdivant shared images of weapons with this undercover agent and expressed intentions to purchase a firearm for his planned assault on a specific grocery store.
Mint Hill Police Chief Joseph Hatley highlighted the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies in preventing such threats. He praised the efforts made to disrupt this potential attack.
The suspect is currently in federal custody and has made his initial court appearance in Charlotte. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison.
Attorney General Pam Bondi remarked on social media that this successful collaboration between federal and local law enforcement prevented what could have been a devastating terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve. She reaffirmed the Department of Justice’s commitment to combating ISIS sympathizers and ensuring accountability for those plotting violence against communities.
