Mother’s Actions Lead to Legal Consequences

A Detroit woman has received a sentence this month for making false bomb threats after her daughter was unable to participate in a high school play.

Crystal Royster, 42, made two false threats claiming there was a bomb at Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, located approximately 17.6 miles northeast of Detroit, on March 12, 2025, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

The threats were made after Royster’s daughter was sent home due to illness, which prevented her from appearing in the school play that day. Following the threats, over 700 individuals were evacuated from the school as local police conducted a thorough search and found no explosives.

Royster pleaded guilty on November 13, 2025, to making a false report or threat regarding a bomb—a felony that carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

On January 8, she was sentenced to two weeks in prison; three days of this time were credited for time already served. Additionally, she will be on probation for 18 months.

As part of her sentence, Royster is prohibited from contacting the victims involved and must notify the school before entering its grounds. She is also required to complete a “Class A impulse control class.”

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido commented on the case: “The defendant was sentenced today for making a false bomb report that resulted in a significant emergency response. While the court determined that probation was the appropriate outcome, her actions nonetheless caused disruption and concern within the community.”
