New York City Mayor-elect’s Firm Position
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani continues to label President Trump as a “fascist,” despite their recent face-to-face meeting at the White House.
During a press conference last week, Mamdani was questioned about his views on Trump. Before he could respond, Trump interjected, suggesting it would be easier for Mamdani to simply agree with him. In response, Mamdani acknowledged Trump’s comment by saying “yes.”
On NBC’s “Meet the Press” this past Sunday, Mamdani reaffirmed his position. “It’s something that I’ve said in the past,” he stated. “I say it today.” He expressed appreciation for their conversation, noting that they openly discussed their disagreements and the political climate leading up to their meeting.
Their meeting came after months of heated exchanges between the two. Trump had previously labeled Mamdani as a “communist” and warned that he would be detrimental to New York City.
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has been vocal in his criticism of Trump. In his victory speech, he referred to the president as a “despot” who has betrayed the nation and represents a culture of corruption.
Despite their contentious history, both men appeared cordial during their White House meeting. They emphasized shared goals regarding affordability and crime rates in New York City.
Trump described the encounter as “great” and highlighted their mutual desire for the city’s success: “The better he does, the happier I am,” he remarked.
Mamdani characterized the meeting as productive and focused on issues central to his campaign platform. He mentioned discussions around rent prices, grocery costs, and utilities—key concerns for many New Yorkers facing economic challenges.
In prior statements, Trump had criticized Mamdani’s political stance while endorsing former Governor Andrew Cuomo in an attempt to undermine Mamdani’s campaign efforts.
Mamdani used his victory speech to challenge Trump’s leadership: “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” he declared.
When asked about previous comments labeling him a despot, Trump downplayed them: “I’ve been called much worse than a despot.” He pointed out areas where they align on policy goals such as housing development and crime reduction.
