Legal Dispute Between Waymo and Santa Monica

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company, and the city of Santa Monica, California, have initiated legal actions against each other regarding the use of charging stations for Waymo’s vehicles.

The city has requested a court order to restrict Waymo from utilizing charging stations operated by Voltera during nighttime hours, specifically from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time. Residents have raised complaints about noise and light disturbances, likening the situation to living next to a “mini-Las Vegas” or “a spaceship,” as reported by KABC-TV.

In response, Waymo has filed its own lawsuit seeking protection against city officials interfering with its charging operations on Broadway in Santa Monica. A spokesperson for Waymo emphasized their commitment to being a responsible neighbor and noted that they have complied with all local regulations while attempting to address community concerns.

Santa Monica officials explained that their lawsuit was prompted by Waymo’s refusal to agree to operational changes at the charging stations that would not require shutting them down. They clarified that this legal action is not an opposition to electric vehicle (EV) charging but rather an enforcement of existing nuisance laws aimed at protecting public health and safety.
