U.S. Forces Target Al Qaeda-Linked Terrorist

U.S. military operations resulted in the death of a terrorist operative associated with al Qaeda, who was implicated in a December ambush that claimed the lives of two American service members and a civilian interpreter in Syria, as reported by the Pentagon on Saturday.

According to U.S. Central Command, a strike conducted in northwest Syria on January 16 led to the demise of Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, identified as an “experienced terrorist leader” connected to the Islamic State gunman responsible for the deaths of three Americans during the December 13 attack.

Historically, al Qaeda and the Islamic State have been adversaries rather than allies, engaging in conflict over territory and influence for over a decade. The CENTCOM statement indicates that both al-Jasim and the ISIS gunman played roles in the assault; however, it does not imply any broader collaboration between their organizations within Syria.

The exact position of al-Jasim within al Qaeda remains ambiguous. The Pentagon characterized him as a “leader affiliated with al Qaeda.”

Navy Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, emphasized the significance of this operation: “The death of a terrorist operative linked to the deaths of three Americans demonstrates our resolve in pursuing terrorists who attack our forces. There is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you.”

The U.S. executed extensive strikes across Syria last month following the December 13 ambush, targeting over 100 sites utilized by ISIS, according to Pentagon officials.

The ISIS gunman involved in the December 13 incident was also killed during that attack.
