New Task Force for Drone Operations

U.S. Central Command announced on Wednesday the creation of a task force aimed at deploying the military’s inaugural one-way attack drone squadron in the Middle East.

The newly formed Task Force Scorpion Strike is part of CENTCOM’s initiative to implement Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s directive for rapid acquisition and deployment of advanced drones in significant quantities.

CENTCOM stated that Scorpion Strike aims to provide low-cost drones to enhance the capabilities of U.S. warfighters.

Similar initiatives are being pursued across various military theaters worldwide, particularly in the Pacific, where commanders are planning a network of autonomous drones intended to deter potential aggression from China regarding Taiwan.

The CENTCOM task force has already established a squadron consisting of Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System drones stationed in the Middle East, although specific numbers have not been disclosed.

Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM’s commander, remarked, “This new task force sets the conditions for using innovation as a deterrent. Equipping our skilled warfighters faster with cutting-edge drone capabilities showcases U.S. military innovation and strength, which deters bad actors.”
