Delegation Heads to Washington
Ukrainian officials, led by Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, are en route to Washington on Saturday for important negotiations scheduled for the following day, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Umerov takes over from Andriy Yermak, who resigned as Zelenskyy’s chief of staff on Friday amid an investigation into energy corruption that involved a search of his home. Yermak had previously indicated plans to travel to Washington this weekend.
The delegation aims to collaborate with U.S. officials to “swiftly and substantively work out the steps needed to end the war,” according to a post by Zelenskyy on X.
This visit occurs during renewed efforts for peace between Ukraine and Russia, following a significant meeting between U.S. diplomats and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva last weekend. Ukrainian officials presented counterproposals regarding a drafted U.S. peace plan developed over the past month by special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Last week, Umerov mentioned that U.S. and Ukrainian officials reached an “understanding” on key terms of the proposed peace plan, although he did not specify which provisions were still pending.
After the Geneva discussions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that substantial progress had been made, with only minor issues remaining—a sentiment echoed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The upcoming meeting comes at a challenging time for Ukraine as it faces significant difficulties since Russia’s invasion in 2022. A political scandal involving kickbacks from a $100 million energy deal has already resulted in the resignations of two ministers prior to Yermak’s departure.
Additionally, Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving over 600,000 homes without power and placing immense pressure on the nation as winter approaches.
