New Tariff Announcement
On Monday, President Trump announced a 25% tariff on any country conducting business with Iran, in response to the violent crackdown on protests in Tehran.
This new tariff mandates that all of Iran’s trading partners will incur an additional charge for any transactions involving the United States. However, specifics regarding the implementation of this tariff were not disclosed by Mr. Trump.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on all business conducted with the United States,” Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social.
Countries such as China, Brazil, Turkey, India, and Russia are among Iran’s largest trading partners, collectively accounting for over $10 billion in annual trade. According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity, Iran ranked as the 36th-largest economy globally in 2023 and was positioned 92nd in total exports.
The president is contemplating various options for U.S. intervention as tensions escalate in Iran. Reports indicate that several hundred protesters have been killed amid ongoing unrest and internet blackouts.
Possible strategies under consideration include supporting anti-government factions within Iran, deploying cyber operations against military and civilian targets, increasing sanctions on Tehran, or even military strikes.
Despite these considerations, it is unlikely that U.S. military forces will be deployed; there has been no movement of military vehicles in the region.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked that President Trump keeps all options available regarding potential actions against Iran. “Airstrikes would be one of many options considered,” she noted during a press briefing.
The protests began last December following a significant collapse of Iran’s currency, which sparked widespread anger and led to larger demonstrations against the regime. The rial has lost half its value over the past year and recently hit a record low against the dollar.
The Iranian government has intensified its crackdown on dissenters over recent days; reports suggest more than 500 individuals have died due to state violence according to human rights organizations. Iranian officials have issued warnings to both the U.S. and Israel regarding potential interventions.
The former president has expressed support for those protesting against the Iranian regime and hinted at possible U.S. assistance if violence continues against civilians.
“Iran is looking at freedom like never before. The USA stands ready to help!” Mr. Trump posted recently on Truth Social.
