Warm Reception in the Oval Office
President Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani shared a cordial meeting in the Oval Office, showcasing mutual respect despite their earlier campaign criticisms. The two leaders greeted reporters after their private discussion, emphasizing their shared commitment to addressing affordability issues in the city.
“We’ve just had a great meeting, a really good, very productive meeting,” Trump remarked, highlighting their common interest in improving the city they both cherish. He stated, “The better he does, the happier I am,” indicating that political affiliations should not hinder collaboration.
Mamdani described the meeting as “productive,” focusing on affordability—an essential theme of his campaign. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss pressing issues such as rent and grocery prices that affect New Yorkers. “I appreciated the time with the president and look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers,” he said.
The meeting comes after a contentious campaign where Trump labeled Mamdani a communist and endorsed Andrew Cuomo in an attempt to undermine his candidacy. In response to past comments calling Trump a despot, Trump shrugged off the insult, stating he has faced worse.
During their discussion, both leaders identified common ground on various issues including crime reduction and housing development. “He wants to see no crime. He wants to see housing built,” Trump noted, expressing optimism about Mamdani’s potential impact on New York City.
The 34-year-old mayor-elect emphasized his willingness to collaborate with anyone committed to making life more affordable for New Yorkers. Ahead of their meeting, he stated his intent to work across party lines for the benefit of over eight million residents.
Trump indicated that he would not withhold funding from New York City as he aims for successful cooperation with Mamdani. This marks a notable change from previous White House communications regarding support for the city.
This meeting was crucial for both leaders; Trump’s approval ratings have been declining amid rising living costs—a significant concern highlighted by recent Democratic victories in local elections focused on affordability issues.
