Minneapolis on High Alert Following ICE Shooting
Minneapolis is experiencing heightened tension after a recent shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, which has left both a federal agent and a migrant hospitalized. President Trump issued a warning on Thursday, suggesting he might invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy military troops if violence continues.
The Department of Homeland Security reported that the ICE officer was attempting to arrest a Venezuelan immigrant when the suspect fled toward a residence. During the arrest attempt, a struggle ensued between the officer and the individual.
As two other migrants intervened, attacking the officer, he discharged his weapon, injuring one of them in the leg. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized this assault as an “attempted murder,” citing that the officer was attacked with a snow shovel and broom handle.
The incident sparked renewed protests in Minneapolis, where demonstrators vandalized vehicles, set fires, and launched fireworks at police officers. In response to escalating violence, Trump threatened to use the Insurrection Act if state leaders do not take action against what he described as “professional agitators” disrupting law enforcement efforts.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged residents to cease violent actions and criticized Trump’s rhetoric as counterproductive. He emphasized the need for peaceful protest rather than chaos. Meanwhile, State Attorney General Keith Ellison announced plans for residents to report federal agents’ activities related to their constitutional rights.
Noem criticized local officials for failing to control unrest and stated that their actions could endanger Minnesota’s citizens. The three migrants involved are currently in ICE custody while investigations into their backgrounds continue.
The Insurrection Act has been historically invoked during civil rights conflicts but faces scrutiny regarding its application today. Critics argue that such measures would exacerbate tensions rather than resolve them.
