President Trump has expressed concerns that meatpacking companies are contributing to the increase in beef prices, prompting him to request an investigation from the Department of Justice to safeguard consumers.
In a social media post, Trump stated he has instructed the department to determine whether the industry is involved in “illicit collusion” aimed at fixing or manipulating prices.
He emphasized, “Action must be taken immediately to protect consumers, combat illegal monopolies, and ensure these corporations are not criminally profiting at the expense of the American people.” He urged the DOJ to act swiftly.
The president’s remarks come as he faces pressure to lower grocery prices while also supporting cattlemen, a key part of his political base.
The price of ground beef has surged due to depleted herds, adverse weather conditions, and high consumer demand, reaching nearly $7 per pound.
Trump suggested increasing beef imports from Argentina as a way to boost supply and reduce prices. However, this proposal has drawn criticism from the U.S. beef industry, which argues it could disrupt domestic markets and contradict Trump’s “America First” stance.
The president’s comments highlighted meatpacking companies as potential culprits behind rising costs. Recently settled price-fixing lawsuits against major meatpackers have raised concerns about industry consolidation and its impact on pricing.
The Coalition for a Prosperous America noted that four major meatpacking firms control 81-85% of the fed-cattle market, exacerbating issues by manipulating prices and supply chains at the expense of ranchers and consumers.
While Trump did not provide specific evidence of illegal activities, he suggested there may be wrongdoing occurring within the marketplace.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to protecting American ranchers from being blamed for issues caused by predominantly foreign-owned meatpackers who inflate prices and threaten food security in the nation.
