White House Defends Trump’s Remarks
The White House addressed the backlash against President Trump’s suggestion that children do not require an abundance of dolls for play. During a recent event in Pennsylvania, he stated that two or three dolls are sufficient.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that residents of Pennsylvania recognize Mr. Trump as a successful businessman who is knowledgeable about economic issues. She explained, “What the president means is that if we want products manufactured in America, particularly from small businesses, we need to support them through tariffs to ensure better quality products available domestically.”
Leavitt further noted, “You might pay a little more—perhaps $1 or $2 extra—but you will receive superior quality while supporting American workers, which is the essence of what the president was conveying.”
Trump faced criticism for his comments regarding doll purchases, where he remarked, “You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. Two or three is nice, but you don’t need 37 dolls.” He added that his administration is making positive changes.
Democratic leaders quickly condemned Trump’s remarks. Representative James McGovern of Massachusetts accused him of being out of touch with everyday Americans, stating on social media, “Trump wants your kids to ration pencils and dolls while he enjoys lavish lifestyles funded by taxpayers.”
Senator Tammy Duckworth from Illinois echoed this sentiment, asserting that Trump’s suggestions reflect a disconnect from the struggles faced by many families across the nation.
This isn’t the first time Trump has made similar statements; earlier in April during a Cabinet meeting, he indicated that his tariff policies could lead to fewer items available in stores. He suggested children might end up with only two dolls instead of thirty due to increased costs associated with American-made products.
