Trump’s Reaction to Greene’s Departure
Former President Donald Trump did not hold back in his criticism of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene after she revealed her decision to resign from Congress.
The Georgia Republican announced on Friday that she would be stepping down from her position in early January.
In a post on social media, Trump stated, “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene, because of plummeting poll numbers, and not wanting to face a primary challenger with a strong Trump endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!), has decided to call it ‘quits.'”
He further criticized her relationship with Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, labeling him as the “worst Republican Congressman in decades” for his voting record against the party. Despite their falling out, Trump acknowledged Greene’s previous support for him.
In response to Trump’s comments, Greene expressed that she felt abandoned due to his refusal to engage with her. She stated, “For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never-ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie and thank her for her service to our country!”
Later speaking with reporters, Trump suggested he could reconcile with Greene but questioned what he would need to forgive her for.
In a video statement released Friday evening, Greene explained that her resignation was influenced by the rift between herself and Trump. She emphasized her love for her family and the desire to avoid a divisive primary battle fueled by Trump’s actions against her.
Greene described the political landscape as absurd and expressed frustration over being treated poorly within the party. Her resignation is set to take effect on January 5th.
The public fallout between Greene and Trump has been exacerbated by differing views on various issues including foreign policy and support for releasing files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
In a phone call with ABC News following the announcement, Trump referred to Greene’s resignation as “great news for the country.”
Greene concluded by stating that she has never valued power or titles but instead focused on serving constituents effectively. She lamented that many of her proposed bills have gone unaddressed while expressing disappointment over Trump’s attacks against her loyalty.
