Investigation into Brown University Shooting

President Trump stated on Monday that the motive behind the recent mass shooting at Brown University is still unclear, while he defended the FBI amid ongoing scrutiny regarding its investigation efforts.

During a press briefing from the Oval Office, Trump mentioned that authorities have yet to determine whether there was a specific target in the attack that occurred on Saturday evening, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries at the prestigious Ivy League institution.

When questioned about criticisms directed at FBI Director Kash Patel concerning his management of the case, Trump expressed confidence in the bureau’s capabilities. He remarked, “It’s always difficult” to identify suspects in high-profile criminal cases and noted past successes of the FBI, including locating an alleged assassin linked to conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

The president emphasized that inquiries regarding security measures should be directed towards Brown University officials. He stated, “You’d really have to ask the school a little bit more about that… they had their own guards, they had their own police.”

Following the shooting incident, Patel announced via social media that a person of interest had been detained in Coventry, Rhode Island. However, this individual was released shortly thereafter as evidence did not warrant continued custody. Local law enforcement confirmed during a press conference that while tips were received regarding this person—a 24-year-old from Wisconsin—there was insufficient evidence for detention.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha conveyed optimism about solving the case soon, indicating there was enough evidence to justify detaining the person initially identified. This incident marks another instance where Patel prematurely claimed on social media that a suspect was in custody following a shooting.
