Trump’s Continued Support for Tariffs
On Saturday, President Trump reiterated his call for the Supreme Court to support his extensive tariff policies.
In a post on Truth Social, he stated, “Tariffs have made our Country Rich, Strong, Powerful, and Safe.” He claimed that other nations have successfully used tariffs against the U.S. for decades but emphasized that under his leadership, “WE HAVE ALL THE CARDS.”
This year, the United States has reportedly collected around $320 billion in customs and excise taxes, a significant increase from $170 billion at the same time last year, according to the Penn Wharton Budget Model.
Trump asserted that tariffs have halted wars and fostered stronger international relationships. He noted improvements in the stock market and 401(k) plans while claiming reductions in inflation and taxes. He added that education is returning to states and highlighted the strength of both the military and southern border.
Around one-third of imports are currently subject to tariffs imposed by Trump under a 1977 law allowing presidential powers during economic emergencies. However, small businesses and Democratic-led states have filed lawsuits against him, arguing that he overstepped Congress’s authority by implementing blanket tariffs.
The plaintiffs contend that these tariffs impose significant costs on companies importing goods into the U.S., affecting their bottom lines.
This month, oral arguments regarding Trump’s tariffs were presented before the Supreme Court. Some justices appeared doubtful about his stance. Trump expressed concern over what he termed “Evil, American hating Forces” opposing them at the court level.
The administration anticipates needing to refund between $750 billion to $1 trillion in tariff revenue if the court rules unfavorably. A decision is expected by June.
