Border czar defends immigration raids
Tom Homan, the White House border czar, addressed criticism regarding recent immigration raids in Minnesota’s Somali neighborhoods, asserting that federal agents are focused on apprehending criminal aliens and that U.S. citizens need not worry.
The operations, which Homan claims could lead to 600,000 deportations across the country, have faced backlash from Democratic leaders and local officials in areas like the Twin Cities, home to approximately 80,000 Somalis.
In a discussion on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Homan countered accusations of aggressive enforcement methods, stating that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are adhering to legal protocols and that those who violate the law will be held accountable.
“There’s a large illegal Somali community there; there is a large illegal alien community there,” he remarked about Minnesota. “We are looking for criminal aliens.” However, Democratic representatives argue that most Somalis residing in Minnesota are U.S. citizens.
Last month, President Trump announced an immediate end to temporary deportation protections for Somalis in Minnesota. This decision followed reports alleging that some individuals had defrauded the state of significant amounts in social services funds.

The president intensified his rhetoric recently during a Cabinet meeting where he referred to Somali immigrants as “garbage” and claimed they contribute nothing beneficial to society. “I don’t want them in our country,” he stated candidly.
Homan defended Trump’s statements by explaining that they pertain to concerns over public safety and national security risks associated with Somalia and other nations. He emphasized that Trump was tasked with overseeing what he described as the largest deportation initiative in U.S. history.
The border czar mentioned that Trump is addressing challenges left by President Joseph R. Biden’s administration, which he accused of neglecting illegal immigration issues and failing to properly vet migrants entering the United States.
The Trump administration has implemented focused immigration enforcement strategies in various cities including Washington D.C., New York City, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Homan noted these operations are crucial due to sanctuary cities’ lack of cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
