Troy Nehls to Step Down
Representative Troy Nehls has officially declared that he will not seek reelection, joining a growing number of lawmakers who are retiring from Congress.
The Texas Republican, a dedicated supporter of former President Trump, has held his congressional seat since 2021. He expressed his decision to retire was motivated by a desire to concentrate on his family and return home after this legislative session.
Nehls stated, “Before making this decision, I called President Trump personally to let him know of my plans. President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear it from me first.”
He reflected on his career by saying, “Serving this country in the military, serving our community in law enforcement, and serving this district in Congress has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers.”
Nehls served 21 years in the Army Reserve and completed combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two Bronze Stars. He also held law enforcement positions as constable and sheriff in Fort Bend County, Texas.
Another prominent Trump ally, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, is also stepping down after announcing her departure from her House seat following a public disagreement with the former president. She plans to leave by January 5.
Additionally, notable departures include Democrats Nancy Pelosi from California and Jerry Nadler from New York. Republican Representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona, Byron Donalds of Florida, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina are leaving Congress to pursue gubernatorial campaigns.
Lawmakers seeking promotions to the Senate include Representatives Mike Collins (Georgia Republican), Robin Kelly (Illinois Democrat), and Wesley Hunt (Texas Republican).
