New Appointment in Virginia’s Safety Office

A former FBI special agent, Stanley Meador, who previously led the Virginia field office, has been appointed to oversee the state’s safety office under newly elected Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger starting in January.

Governor Spanberger expressed confidence in Meador’s qualifications, stating he has the expertise necessary to protect our citizens and will ensure that Virginia remains a safe environment for all residents.

Meador’s tenure at the FBI included significant scrutiny when he was in charge of the Richmond field office. His leadership coincided with the issuance of a controversial memo that labeled certain Catholic groups as potential threats. This memo, which became public in January 2023, categorized “radical-traditionalist Catholics” as possible “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.”

The memo drew criticism and led to congressional investigations into its creation and implications. Following its leak, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray faced questions from lawmakers regarding the agency’s stance on the document.

The FBI later retracted the memo amid growing concerns about its content and impact on religious communities. Republican members of Congress have since sought accountability for how such classifications were made and what actions were taken by FBI officials following its release.
