Incident Overview
A federal immigration officer shot and injured two individuals in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. This event occurred just one day after a separate incident in Minneapolis where an ICE officer fatally shot a woman.
Local law enforcement responded to the scene of the shooting and were later called to another location nearby, where they discovered a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Portland Police Bureau Chief Bob Day stated, “We are still in the early stages of this incident. We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.”
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, reported that Border Patrol agents were attempting to stop a vehicle believed to be connected to the Tren de Aragua gang, which is classified as a terrorist organization. When agents identified themselves, the driver attempted to run them over, prompting one agent to fire their weapon. McLaughlin characterized this action as “defensive.”
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed her disapproval of federal actions despite explanations provided by officials. She labeled the shooting as “another terrible, unnecessary violent event instigated by the reckless agenda of the Trump administration.” Kotek emphasized that such actions foster an environment of lawlessness.
Representative Maxine Dexter, who represents the area in Congress, confirmed that both victims were alive and criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for their role in the incident. She demanded that local authorities lead an investigation into the shooting.
“ICE has done nothing but inject terror, chaos, and cruelty into our communities,” she stated. “ICE must immediately end all active operations in Portland.” Similar demands have emerged following recent events in Minneapolis.
