Schumer Faces Pressure from Within His Party

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer is under scrutiny from fellow Democrats following a bipartisan agreement reached on Sunday, which aims to resolve the impending government shutdown.

Although Mr. Schumer, a Democrat from New York, opposed the deal, his inability to prevent some caucus members from conceding on critical health-care issues has prompted calls for his resignation.

“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” stated Representative Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, via social media. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”

The Democratic party aimed to include an extension of enhanced Obamacare premium subsidies in the government funding bill. However, Republicans agreed only to consider a vote on this matter after reopening the government.

Eight Senate Democrats sided with Republicans by accepting their proposal to hold a vote on health care subsidies in December. Some party members view this vote as merely a distraction and doubt its passage.

In his statement against the bipartisan deal, Mr. Schumer emphasized that Democrats will persist in their efforts to protect millions of families from losing health-care coverage.

“Make no mistake about it; the American people know who is inflicting this healthcare trauma on them: Donald Trump and the Republicans,” he asserted. “Americans will remember Republican intransigence every time they make a sky-high payment on health insurance.”

Graham Platner, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Maine next year, echoed Mr. Khanna’s sentiments regarding Mr. Schumer’s leadership capabilities.

“Chuck Schumer is not built for this moment,” he remarked.

Mr. Schumer has endorsed Maine Governor Janet Mills in her Democratic primary race against whoever emerges victorious will challenge long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins in one of 2026’s most closely watched contests.

Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, who is campaigning against incumbent Democratic Senator Ed Markey, also expressed support for replacing Mr. Schumer.

“Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership,” he posted online. If Mr. Schumer “were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare.”

The criticism directed at Mr. Schumer arose even as he was among 39 Democrats continuing to filibuster legislation aimed at reopening the government due to its lack of provisions extending enhanced Obamacare premium tax credits.

The shutdown appears close to resolution after eight Senate Democrats broke ranks and voted alongside Republicans on Sunday to advance legislation that includes a promise of addressing health care concerns in December.
