Explosion Claims Life of Senior Russian Officer
A car bomb explosion in Moscow on Monday resulted in the death of a high-ranking officer in the Russian army, with officials suggesting that Ukrainian involvement may be behind the attack.
The blast claimed the life of Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who served as the head of the Operational Training Directorate within the Russian General Staff.
According to Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, authorities are exploring multiple leads regarding this incident. “One line of inquiry suggests that Ukrainian intelligence services orchestrated this crime,” she stated.
This incident adds to a series of attacks attributed to Kyiv targeting Russian military personnel and pro-Kremlin figures since Vladimir Putin‘s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
In a similar case, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed on April 25 by a car bomb detonated remotely while he was traveling through a suburb of Moscow. The explosion was powerful enough to shatter windows in nearby buildings.
Additionally, Darya Dugina, a pro-Putin activist and daughter of nationalist figure Aleksandr Dugin, died in an August 2022 car bombing near Moscow, which U.S. officials believed had been sanctioned by elements within the Ukrainian government.
