Senate Republicans Seek Answers

Senate Republicans are pressing for clarity regarding the abortion pill’s status at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but Commissioner Marty Makary has not provided sufficient information.

In a response to a Senate inquiry about the FDA’s review of mifepristone, one of the two medications used in at-home abortions, Dr. Makary deferred, citing ongoing litigation as a reason for his limited answers. He assured that the FDA is reviewing evidence and would keep Congress updated as the review progresses.

Bill Cassidy, Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and a medical doctor himself, labeled Dr. Makary’s response as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that Republicans have been urging the FDA to clarify its safety study on mifepristone and questioned why federal agencies seem to neglect their duty to protect mothers and unborn children.

Senator Josh Hawley also criticized Dr. Makary for allegedly delaying the safety review of mifepristone until after midterm elections. In his correspondence, he expressed doubts about whether an independent safety review was being conducted.

The Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization responded to concerns raised by a Bloomberg report by demanding Dr. Makary’s resignation; however, he dismissed these claims as mere rumors.

Dr. Makary stated that there is an ongoing evaluation of mifepristone as part of standard Risk Evaluation and Management Strategies, alongside an additional safety study currently in progress.

The commissioner noted that data from 2000 to 2012 indicated 2,740 adverse events linked to mifepristone use among women, including serious incidents requiring blood transfusions. This data predates changes made during the Obama and Biden administrations that relaxed regulations surrounding mifepristone access.

SBA Pro-Life America highlighted that despite acknowledging significant health risks associated with abortion drugs, current policies allowing mail-order prescriptions remain unchanged. They urged immediate action to address these concerns.
