Homeland Security Secretary’s Stance
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated on Sunday that Minnesota’s elected officials have “lost credibility” and urged them to “tone down their rhetoric” following the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
Noem defended the decision to classify Renee Nicole Good as a domestic terrorist, asserting that she had used her vehicle as a weapon against the agent during the incident on Wednesday.
The Secretary mentioned that the Department of Justice is adhering to standard protocols in its investigation of the shooting. She suggested that there has been reluctance from local and state officials—including Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both Democrats—to cooperate with federal authorities due to their responses and previous hesitance regarding immigration enforcement.
“If you look at what Governor Walz has said, if you look at what Mayor Frey has said, they’ve extremely politicized and inappropriately discussed the situation,” she remarked during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “It has inflamed public sentiment.”
Noem criticized local leaders for allegedly encouraging destruction and violence seen in Minneapolis over recent days. She urged them to act responsibly and prioritize public safety, stating that inflammatory language undermines law enforcement credibility.
The circumstances surrounding Good’s death have polarized opinions across the nation. Critics of former President Trump view video footage as evidence of an unjustified shooting by a federal officer, while supporters argue that Good nearly struck the agent with her vehicle.

Noem asserted that “the vehicle was weaponized” and claimed it posed a threat to law enforcement officers. She labeled this incident as an act of domestic terrorism.
Mayor Frey dismissed Noem’s characterization, contending that it was reckless use of power by the federal agent that resulted in Good’s death. He expressed his bias based on his observations of the incident.
The tragic event occurred shortly after 2000 federal officers were deployed to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, which hosts one of America’s largest Somali communities. Former President Trump has criticized Minnesota’s leadership over various issues, including allegations of fraud involving Somali Americans related to childcare funding.
The aftermath of Good’s death has led to protests across multiple cities, including Minneapolis where demonstrators have clashed with ICE officers.
