Nancy Pelosi’s Decision to Retire

Representative Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that she will retire at the end of her current term, concluding a remarkable 20-term career in Congress. She made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House.

Pelosi initially lost her position as Speaker but reclaimed it eight years later, ultimately passing the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders.

Throughout her tenure, she played a pivotal role in two presidential administrations—those of Barack Obama and Joe Biden—championing significant legislation such as the Affordable Care Act in 2010 and spearheading recovery efforts following the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

She was also known for her opposition to former President Donald Trump, overseeing two successful impeachment votes against him, although he was acquitted by the Senate both times.

At 85 years old, Pelosi first won election to represent San Francisco in 1987. In a video message announcing her retirement, she expressed gratitude for serving as a voice for her constituents: “I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”

In her farewell message, she urged San Francisco residents to recognize their power and continue participating actively in democracy: “We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way…”

Pelosi hinted at her decision following California’s recent elections that approved new congressional maps aimed at diminishing Republican representation. Her departure opens up a prominent seat in an overwhelmingly Democratic district.

Two Democrats have already declared their candidacies: state Senator Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Additionally, there is speculation about Pelosi’s daughter, Christine Pelosi, potentially entering the race.

Fellow Democrats praised Pelosi’s leadership and influence within the party. Representative Diana DeGette remarked that “Nancy Pelosi is the greatest speaker in the history of our country,” while Representative Hakeem Jeffries described her as an incredible mentor.

Pelosi’s career has seen significant shifts within her party—from being part of its left flank to becoming its center—and now witnessing its further leftward movement with emerging leaders like Ocasio-Cortez.

Biden praised Pelosi’s contributions: “I often said Nancy Pelosi was the best Speaker of the House in American history.” Her legislative achievements include landmark laws addressing healthcare reform and economic recovery initiatives during challenging times.
