Subpoenas Issued to Minnesota Officials
The Justice Department has served subpoenas to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as part of an ongoing investigation into their strong opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The two Democratic leaders have condemned the subpoenas as intimidation efforts, asserting that they will not be silenced. In recent days, they have called for calm among residents who have been confronting federal officers in the streets.
As unrest persists in Minneapolis, Governor Walz activated the National Guard over the weekend to assist local authorities overwhelmed by protests.
Reports indicate that the Pentagon has positioned active-duty troops for potential deployment at President Trump’s direction. Approximately 1,500 soldiers from the Army’s 11th Airborne Division have been mobilized in response to Trump’s threats to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy regular troops for law enforcement purposes.
A second shooting incident this month involving an ICE officer has sparked renewed protests in Minneapolis. Demonstrators achieved a legal victory when a federal judge ruled that ICE agents had acted too aggressively towards observers and protesters during arrests.
Judge Katherine Menendez criticized ICE officers for using pepper spray indiscriminately on protesters, suggesting their actions were retaliatory rather than necessary for public safety. She emphasized that there is a persistent pattern of conduct that infringes upon First Amendment rights.
Following a shooting where an ICE officer wounded an individual resisting arrest, new demonstrations erupted. Protesters began setting fires and vandalizing government vehicles, leading to charges against individuals involved in thefts from law enforcement vehicles.
The unrest has led to significant legal implications, with prosecutors charging Raul Gutierrez for stealing firearms from an FBI vehicle during the chaos. He was apprehended after fleeing from authorities during a traffic stop.
Mayor Frey described federal agents as an “occupying force” and criticized any invocation of the Insurrection Act as unconstitutional. Both he and Governor Walz are now under investigation by the Justice Department due to their vocal opposition to ICE operations.
