Productive Discussions in Miami

Special envoy Steve Witkoff, representing the Trump administration in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, described the recent peace talks held in Miami as “productive and constructive.” This sentiment was echoed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier on Sunday.

The discussions marked the third consecutive day of diplomatic efforts led by Witkoff, alongside President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and White House staffer Josh Gruenbaum. The U.S. delegation engaged separately with representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and several European nations.

Witkoff noted that over the past three days, the Ukrainian team had a series of fruitful meetings with American and European partners. The agenda primarily revolved around a U.S.-backed “20-point plan” aimed at resolving the conflict. Meetings with Russian officials took place on both Friday and Saturday.

The discussions also addressed security guarantees for Ukraine and the potential role of the U.S. in enforcing these measures, along with strategies for economic recovery.

Witkoff emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to achieving a fair and lasting peace. He reiterated similar sentiments regarding Russia, stating that their meetings over the weekend were also productive.

Zelenskyy described it as a “significant diplomatic week”, indicating that involved nations would continue working on documents aimed at ending hostilities. He highlighted that his team was meticulously reviewing each point during negotiations with American counterparts.

However, he cautioned that negotiations must progress beyond mere rhetoric or political maneuvering while acknowledging ongoing military actions by Russia during peace talks.

Kiril Dmitriev, Moscow’s chief negotiator, reported that discussions were moving forward constructively and would continue into subsequent days.

Despite optimistic developments in Florida, violence persisted in Ukraine. A recent missile strike in Odessa resulted in eight fatalities and left 27 others injured, according to emergency services reports.

This attack added tension to negotiations already overshadowed by comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who asserted his military’s advances across various fronts in Ukraine during an annual news conference.

The night following Putin’s remarks saw Ukrainian forces targeting an airbase in Sevastopol, Crimea, destroying two Russian fighter jets. Additionally, strikes were reported against Russian oil assets in the Caspian Sea.

Ukraine has broadened its efforts to disrupt Russian supply lines by targeting an oil tanker off Crete’s eastern coast—a significant move noted as one of the first strikes occurring in international waters amid this conflict.

Peter Doran from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies remarked on this development: “Kyiv has a legitimate right to stop this energy network.”
