Media coverage favors Democrats amid government shutdown

One-Sided Media Narrative

The media’s portrayal of Democrats during the ongoing government shutdown has been notably biased, shielding them from accountability despite numerous votes by party lawmakers to block efforts to reopen the government, according to an analysis.

Democratic leaders are asserting that the shutdown and its associated hardships are solely the responsibility of the GOP, with few mainstream news outlets challenging this narrative.

On Friday morning, New York Governor Kathy Hochul addressed frustrated airline passengers affected by canceled flights due to federal funding lapses, urging them to “thank Trump and Washington Republicans,” while calling for an end to what she termed a “GOP shutdown.”

This perspective may seem misleading, as Senate Democrats have withheld votes necessary for passing a funding measure. Nevertheless, many media outlets have largely echoed Hochul’s viewpoint, reflected in polls indicating that the public predominantly blames Republicans for the shutdown.

An analysis revealed that major networks like ABC, CBS, and NBC have consistently criticized Congressional Republicans and President Trump throughout the shutdown while largely exonerating Democrats from blame.

Analysts monitoring 67 reports on the government shutdown across these networks found that most heavily favored Democratic narratives. Only about 12 reports—less than 20%—acknowledged that Democrats had refused to support a stopgap spending bill aimed at reopening the government.

Instead of focusing on this refusal, networks like ABC News defended Democrats’ push for extended Obamacare tax credits and warned of potential premium increases without these subsidies.

Dan Schneider from the Media Research Center noted that such one-sided coverage exacerbates public distrust in media. He expressed hope that with Senate Democrats primarily responsible for this historic shutdown, media would strive for objectivity rather than partisan support.

The subsidies were initially intended to expire post-pandemic. Although Democrats could have made them permanent when included in a COVID-19 relief package, they opted not to in order to lower overall costs. Now they seek permanent funding from a GOP-led Congress at an estimated cost of nearly half a trillion dollars over ten years.

Mainstream news has shifted focus towards individuals facing health issues due to rising premiums if subsidies are not extended. For instance, World News Tonight anchor David Muir reported on Day 15 of the shutdown about how millions could be affected if these subsidies are not maintained.

The print media has also shown a tendency towards sympathetic coverage of Democrats compared to previous instances where GOP strategies led to government shutdowns. Historical comparisons reveal stark differences in how past actions were portrayed versus current events.

A recent article highlighted food stamp funding issues without mentioning Democratic opposition to bills aimed at reopening government services. Instead, it placed blame squarely on Trump’s administration for halting benefits during the shutdown.
