Georgia Representative Steps Down
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has declared her intention to resign from Congress, expressing that the loyalty she has shown to President Trump and the Republican Party has not been reciprocated. She stated she refuses to be treated like a “battered wife.”
In a 10-minute video shared on social media late Friday, Ms. Greene elaborated on her decision.
“I love my family too much, and I do not want my district to face a damaging primary against me by the president we all supported,” she said. “It’s absurd and completely unserious.”
The 51-year-old representative will not complete her term but plans to serve until the end of the year. Her resignation will take effect on January 5, just before Congress reconvenes after the holiday break.
Ms. Greene emphasized that her primary goal has been to hold the Republican Party accountable and ensure it fulfills its promises to voters, a task she described as increasingly difficult.
“My bills, which align with many of President Trump’s executive orders, have just sat there collecting dust,” she noted.
Last weekend, Mr. Trump announced he was withdrawing his endorsement of Ms. Greene due to her efforts in pushing for the Justice Department to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case.
“Standing up for American women who were victimized should not lead me to be labeled a traitor,” she asserted.
The former president commented that Ms. Greene’s resignation is due to declining poll numbers and concerns about facing a strong primary challenger endorsed by him.
Ms. Greene expressed disappointment over spending years supporting Mr. Trump and other Republicans only to find herself at odds with them.
“I spent millions of my own money,” she lamented, “and missed precious time with my family.”
The former representative concluded by stating that while Mr. Trump’s criticisms were painful, her convictions remain steadfast and are rooted in her faith rather than any individual relationship.
