Former Honduran President’s Release

Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, has been released from a U.S. prison following a pardon granted by President Trump for his drug trafficking conviction.

A member of the National Party in Honduras, Mr. Hernández served as president from 2014 to 2022. He was extradited to the United States in April 2022 by the Biden Justice Department to face trial.

In March 2024, he was found guilty of possessing machine guns and conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S., resulting in a sentence of 45 years in prison along with an $8 million fine.

Throughout his trial, Mr. Hernández maintained his innocence, despite prosecutors alleging that he operated Honduras as a “narco-state,” accepting bribes from drug traffickers.

He was released from a high-security facility in Hazelton, West Virginia, on Monday. His wife, Ana Garcia, expressed gratitude towards President Trump for the pardon on social media.

“After nearly four years of pain and waiting, my husband Juan Orlando Hernández returned to being a free man,” Ms. Garcia stated.

While aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Mr. Trump explained that he pardoned Mr. Hernández at the request of Honduras, claiming that they believed he had been wrongfully accused.

The decision to pardon Hernández raised eyebrows as it seemed contradictory to Trump’s tough stance against drug trafficking, which included military actions against drug boats in Caribbean waters.

“Why would we pardon this guy then go after Maduro for running drugs into the United States?” questioned Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana via social media.

The Attorney General of Honduras, Johel Zelaya, indicated that his office would pursue justice and address impunity but did not clarify any potential charges against Mr. Hernández upon his return home.
