Announcement of Candidacy

D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George revealed on Monday her intention to run for mayor in the upcoming election, following Mayor Muriel Bowser’s decision not to pursue a fourth term.

The Ward 4 Democrat, who identifies as a democratic socialist, emphasized that her campaign will prioritize affordability and public safety if she is elected to lead the District.

“Too many residents still feel squeezed financially, from unaffordable housing to childcare, and feel unsafe in their neighborhoods,” Ms. Lewis George stated in a written announcement.

She further expressed concern about the unequal access to opportunities and described the city government as often unresponsive, stating, “That’s wrong; it’s not the D.C. we should be, and that’s why I’m running for mayor.”

Ms. Lewis George has been serving on the council since 2020 and is a native of Washington, D.C. She is the first candidate to officially announce her campaign for mayor.

D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie, an independent at-large representative, has also indicated interest in entering the mayoral race during recent media discussions.
