House Approves Controversial Bill

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to pass a bill that would make gender-affirming care for minors a criminal offense, imposing potential prison sentences of up to 10 years for parents and medical professionals who authorize or provide such treatments.

The final tally was 216-211, with the vote largely reflecting party lines. Notably, three Democrats sided with the majority of Republicans in favor of the legislation.

This bill was a significant priority for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia who is set to resign on January 5 following disputes with President Trump and GOP leadership. Greene stated, “It will end genital mutilation and chemical castration of children and imprison offenders for up to 10 years,” emphasizing that this legislation aligns with President Trump’s executive order and the commitments made by Republicans ahead of the 2024 elections.

GOP leaders assured Greene that they would bring her bill to a vote as part of negotiations related to an annual defense bill she opposed. Greene expressed disappointment over needing to use such tactics to secure support for what she believes should be a universally endorsed measure.

Several Republican representatives voiced their support, arguing that gender-affirming care leads children towards irreversible decisions regarding their bodies. Rep. Barry Moore from Alabama claimed, “Through gender-affirming care, Democrats are indoctrinating children… It is not life-saving care; it is child abuse.” In contrast, Democrats defended gender-affirming care as being based on scientific evidence and endorsed by major medical organizations in the U.S.

Rep. Kim Schrier, a Democrat from Washington, criticized the bill for undermining parental rights and instilling fear among healthcare providers. She stated, “This bill will rob parents of their freedom to make decisions for their own children.” Vermont Democrat Rep. Becca Balint described Republican efforts as a “creepy obsession” with policing medical decisions regarding gender identity.

The legislation could potentially criminalize the use of puberty blockers for transgender youth while allowing other minors access to these medications. Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, pointed out that puberty blockers are often used safely by families dealing with early onset puberty issues unrelated to gender dysphoria.

Rep. Sarah McBride, the only transgender member of Congress, shared her personal experience with gender dysphoria and emphasized the importance of access to appropriate medical care: “My biggest regret in life is that I never had a childhood without that pain.” She highlighted how difficult it can be for others to understand the necessity of gender-affirming treatment.

Republicans have raised concerns about young people being influenced into making life-altering decisions regarding their identities due to societal pressures. Rep. Glenn Grothman, representing Wisconsin, remarked on how various societal influences may lead youth toward identifying as transgender.

Greene clarified that her intention is not to undermine anyone’s identity but rather to urge caution before minors undergo significant medical procedures or treatments: “This is simply a bill to tell kids, ‘hold on’; parents, ‘hold on’…”
