Upcoming Meeting at the White House
President Trump is set to meet with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House next month.
Trump expressed his anticipation for the meeting, stating, “I look forward to having a meeting with Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, in the White House, during the first week of February,” via Truth Social.
The agenda may include discussions on drug trafficking into the United States. Trump emphasized, “I am sure it will work out very well for Colombia and the U.S.A., but cocaine and other drugs must be STOPPED from coming into the United States.”
This week, Trump had a phone conversation with Petro where he mentioned that Petro “called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements” between them. He appreciated Petro’s tone during their discussion and looks forward to their upcoming meeting.
The two leaders have recently clashed over Trump’s stance on Venezuela and the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in New York on drug trafficking and weapons charges. Last month, Trump referred to Petro as “no friend of the United States” regarding military actions in Venezuela.
On Sunday, Trump labeled Petro a “sick man” who “likes selling cocaine to the United States,” adding that a potential military operation in Colombia would be acceptable to him.
Petro has been vocal against U.S. military actions in Venezuela, describing them as an “attack on the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin America.” He expressed hope that his meeting with Trump could contribute towards preventing global conflict.
