Judge Dismisses Criminal Case Against Trump
A Georgia judge has officially dismissed the criminal case against former President Donald Trump, which was related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. This decision marks the conclusion of a lengthy two-year legal battle.
Judge Scott McAfee agreed to terminate the prosecution after Peter J. Skandalakis, the newly appointed district attorney, opted not to pursue the case further.
Skandalakis replaced Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who had been disqualified from the case following concerns raised by Trump’s legal team regarding her personal relationship with a lead investigator involved in the matter.
In response to the dismissal, Trump expressed on Truth Social that “law and justice” had triumphed, asserting that “this case should have never been brought in the first place.”
Willis had previously secured a racketeering indictment against Trump and several co-defendants after he allegedly pressured Georgia officials to find enough votes to reverse his loss to President Joe Biden.
The dismissal represents a notable shift in various criminal cases initiated by Democratic prosecutors against Trump over recent years. Following his election last year for a second term, Trump successfully quashed two federal cases linked to the 2020 election and sensitive documents stored at his Florida residence.
A separate New York case concerning hush-money payments made before the 2016 presidential election resulted in Trump’s conviction on multiple counts of falsifying business records, which he is currently appealing. Additionally, he faces civil lawsuits in New York that have led to unfavorable judgments against him.
This past Wednesday, Trump predicted that all his legal issues would soon be resolved. He stated that “the few remaining Democrat witch hunts will soon meet the same embarrassing end,” expressing confidence in continued victories ahead.
The Georgia case initially appeared strong as Willis obtained early plea deals from several co-defendants. However, complications arose when it was revealed that she had a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, an investigator on her team. The defense argued this created an unacceptable financial conflict due to their shared meals and trips together.
Although Judge McAfee allowed Willis to remain involved if Wade left, Trump’s attorneys successfully appealed this decision. A panel of judges concluded that there were grounds for disqualifying Willis and her office from handling the case.
With Skandalakis now overseeing proceedings, he has chosen not to advance with charges against Trump. Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow remarked that “the political persecution of President Trump by disqualified DA Fani Willis is finally over,” emphasizing that this case should never have been initiated and commending Skandalakis for halting what he termed lawfare.
