Five Antifa Members Plead Guilty
Five individuals associated with the left-wing group Antifa have pleaded guilty to terrorism charges stemming from an attack on a Texas immigration detention center last summer, which resulted in injuries to a police officer.
The defendants—Nathan Baumann, Joy Gibson, Seth Sikes, Lynette Sharp, and John Thomas—could face up to 15 years in prison after entering their pleas on federal charges related to providing material support for terrorism.
A sixth individual, Rebecca Morgan, is anticipated to plead guilty to similar charges next week regarding the July 4 incident outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. Additionally, nine other alleged Antifa members involved in the shooting are scheduled for arraignment on December 3.
Robert Cerna, head of ICE’s Dallas Field Office, stated that the coordinated attack aimed to create chaos and undermine law enforcement. He emphasized that local authorities united to identify those responsible for this violent act.
The FBI Director Kash Patel noted that these charges mark a significant development as they are among the first targeting Antifa directly. This follows the Trump administration’s designation of the group as a domestic terror organization earlier this year.
Traditionally lacking a formal structure like other terrorist organizations, Antifa has been linked to violent protests and confrontations with conservative activists in cities such as Portland, Oregon. President Trump attributed responsibility for the attack directly to Antifa members.
According to prosecutors, the assailants arrived at the detention center dressed in black clothing and ignited fireworks to provoke a law enforcement response. Once police arrived, one member reportedly shouted instructions before opening fire on officers.
Most suspects were apprehended at the scene; however, Sharp and Thomas were charged with aiding alleged gunman Benjamin Song in evading capture until his arrest on July 15.
The frequency of attacks against federal agents has risen amid heightened efforts by the Trump administration to deport undocumented immigrants. Recent incidents include shootings directed at Border Patrol agents and assaults involving vehicles during immigration operations.
