Investigation Launched by Justice Department
The Justice Department is investigating prominent political figures in Minnesota for allegedly obstructing federal law enforcement efforts. Subpoenas have been issued as part of this inquiry.
According to reports, subpoenas have been directed at Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both members of the Democratic Party. It remains unclear whether these subpoenas have been officially served.
Both leaders have publicly criticized the recent surge in federal immigration enforcement initiated by President Trump, which followed allegations of significant fraud within the migrant community. They have urged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to withdraw from Minnesota.
Trump administration officials contend that the rhetoric from state leaders has crossed a line into demonization of federal agents and incitement for residents to take action against them.
Governor Walz expressed his disapproval of the investigation on social media, likening it to previous actions taken against other notable politicians. He stated, “Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic.” He also pointed out that the only individual not under investigation for a recent shooting incident is the federal agent involved.
Mayor Frey described the subpoena as an obvious attempt at intimidation but affirmed his commitment to maintaining safety in Minneapolis, stating, “I will not be intimidated. My focus remains where it’s always been: keeping our city safe.”
The recent death of a local resident and an incident involving an ICE officer wounding a fleeing undocumented immigrant have heightened tensions across Minnesota.
Both sides are urging each other to take steps toward reducing tensions. Mayor Frey emphasized that “Minnesota needs ICE to leave,” while Governor Walz called on residents to document alleged ICE abuses during a speech prior to the latest shooting incident.
The state has also initiated legal action aimed at halting the ongoing enforcement surge by federal authorities.
