Incident Overview
A federal agent attempting to apprehend an undocumented immigrant in Minnesota was ambushed by assailants wielding a shovel and a broom handle, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The Venezuelan migrant targeted for arrest sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Both he and the officer were subsequently transported to a hospital for medical attention, as reported by DHS.
This incident marks the third shooting involving immigration enforcement officers this month, with two occurring in Minneapolis.
DHS attributed the attack on law enforcement personnel to what they describe as “hateful rhetoric” from Democratic leaders. The department stated, “This assault on another courageous law enforcement member occurred while Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey are actively promoting organized resistance against ICE and federal law enforcement.”
DHS indicated that officers were conducting a traffic stop related to a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who had entered the U.S. under current administration policies. The incident unfolded shortly before 7 p.m. local time in Minneapolis.

The suspect attempted to flee in his vehicle but crashed into a parked car before abandoning it and running on foot. An officer managed to catch up with him, but during their confrontation, the suspect violently assaulted the officer.
As they struggled on the ground, two individuals emerged from an apartment building and began attacking the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. The migrant then broke free from his restraint and joined in the assault.
The officer fired his weapon during this altercation, injuring the migrant in the leg. Following this, all three attackers retreated into an apartment building where they later barricaded themselves but have since been apprehended by authorities.
Just prior to this shooting incident, Governor Walz had publicly criticized DHS, describing their actions as an “occupation” of Minnesota.

The governor characterized it as “a campaign of organized brutality against Minnesotans by our own federal government.” His comments followed another controversial shooting involving an ICE officer just days earlier that has sparked national debate over law enforcement tactics.
