Elise Stefanik Suspends Campaign
Representative Elise Stefanik has officially ended her campaign for the governorship of New York and announced that she will not seek reelection for her House seat.
In a statement released on Friday, Ms. Stefanik expressed her appreciation for the extensive support she received from Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and Democrats throughout the state. She stated, “I am truly humbled and grateful for the historic and overwhelming support from all across the state for our campaign to Save New York.”
Ms. Stefanik emphasized that her decision was not made lightly, considering its impact on her family. She noted, “However, as we have seen in past elections, while we would have overwhelmingly won this primary, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York.”
The 41-year-old Congresswoman entered the race last November to challenge Democratic incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul.
There had been speculation regarding Representative Mike Lawler’s potential candidacy; however, he confirmed in July that he would not run. Instead, he is focusing on his reelection campaign for his House seat and has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
Following Ms. Stefanik’s announcement, Mr. Trump publicly voiced his support: “Elise Stefanik, a fantastic person and Congresswoman from New York State, has just announced she won’t be running for Governor. Elise is a tremendous talent… I am with her all the way,” he wrote on Truth Social.
This month saw Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman enter the governor’s race as well, complicating matters further for Ms. Stefanik.
Both candidates are viewed favorably by Mr. Trump; however, he has yet to endorse either one specifically. State GOP Chair Ed Cox quickly endorsed Mr. Blakeman after news broke about Ms. Stefanik’s withdrawal.
Cox stated: “Bruce Blakeman has my endorsement… He cut taxes… and made Nassau County the safest county in America.”
Sources close to Ms. Stefanik’s campaign criticized Mr. Blakeman’s entry into the race as self-serving, suggesting it was aimed at boosting his profile rather than genuinely competing against Governor Hochul.
State Conservative Party Chair Gerard Kassar expressed disappointment over Ms. Stefanik’s decision but respected it: “Elise is an asset to our state and nation… I have no doubt we’ll see her shine in future roles.”
This past November, Ms. Stefanik was nominated by President Trump to become United Nations ambassador; however, that nomination was withdrawn due to concerns about its impact on the GOP’s slim majority in the House.
The governor’s race presents significant challenges for Republicans; Mr. Blakeman remains relatively unknown outside Long Island while George Pataki remains the last Republican governor elected in New York since serving three terms from 1995 to 2006.
