Unidentified Drones Over French Military Base
Authorities in France reported that unidentified drones were observed above a military intelligence base three times from November 26 to 30, raising alarms about the security of airspace in Europe.
The sightings occurred over the Creil military base, located just north of Paris, which serves as an intelligence training center, according to Colonel Thomas Bardin, who assumed command last year.
Officials have not been able to determine the origins of the drones and have not clarified whether they were commercial or military in nature. The French air force did not disclose if any of the drones were intercepted.
This incident is part of a broader trend, with multiple drone sightings reported across France and other European nations. Recently, French prosecutors initiated an investigation into drone activity near the Île Longue nuclear submarine base in Brittany.
In October, another unidentified drone was seen hovering over a police station before moving towards a military convoy transporting main battle tanks. Shortly after, a drone was spotted near the Eurenco ammunition plant in Bergerac, a key site for France’s defense industry.
The recent surge in drone sightings has sparked concerns regarding NATO’s capability to protect its airspace. In response, some member countries have proposed establishing a “drone wall” along the alliance’s eastern border to create an advanced defense system against such incursions.
While the source of these drones remains uncertain, European leaders have pointed fingers at Russia. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, suggested that these incursions are part of a hybrid warfare strategy aimed at undermining NATO and its support for Ukraine.
Moscow has refuted claims that it is intentionally provoking Europe through drone activity. Russian President Vladimir Putin contended that discussions surrounding Russian drones are merely attempts to encourage NATO members to increase their defense spending.
