Insights from Dr. Ingrid Skop
Hi, I’m Sean Salai, a culture reporter covering the March for Life.
Today, we are at the 53rd National March for Life, where we are engaging with pro-life leaders.
Dr. Ingrid Skop: Thank you, Sean. I’m Dr. Ingrid Skop, a board-certified OB-GYN from Texas and the Director of Medical Affairs at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, focusing on life-related research.
I have one question for you today: What do you hope to see from the Trump administration regarding pro-life policies this year in light of the changes following the Dobbs ruling?
I believe it’s crucial to acknowledge that abortion drugs like Mifepristone and Misoprostol are being mismanaged. There is no longer a requirement for an in-person consultation before these medications are prescribed. Women can order them online without proper oversight, and unfortunately, abusive partners can also access them easily. This lack of documentation means these drugs are frequently shipped to pro-life states like Texas, leading to medically unsupervised abortions without any prior testing or follow-up care.
About one in twenty women end up in emergency rooms due to complications after using these drugs. I have treated many such cases; it’s truly heartbreaking as there seems to be little support beyond emergency services. The physical and emotional toll on women can be severe and long-lasting.
Moreover, we lack comprehensive data on long-term effects or potential complications in future pregnancies because there is no mandatory federal data collection on abortion procedures. It’s essential that we disseminate accurate information and that regulators re-establish necessary safeguards around Mifepristone to protect women from these risks.
