Special Hearing on the Fifth Anniversary
Democrats are set to observe the fifth anniversary of the 2021 Capitol attack with a dedicated hearing that will address ongoing election threats and new offenses committed by individuals pardoned for their roles in the January 6 events, as announced by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Representative Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi who previously chaired a House select committee investigating January 6 during the Democratic majority, will lead the hearing.
In a letter to his fellow Democrats, Jeffries stated, “Nearly five years ago, a violent mob incited by Donald Trump attempted to halt the peaceful transfer of power. Thanks to the extraordinary bravery of U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement professionals, this treacherous effort to prevent certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election failed.”
Following his loss in November 2020 to Joseph R. Biden, Trump spent weeks alleging electoral fraud and urging states to review their vote counts. On January 6, he delivered an impassioned speech at the White House Ellipse, encouraging supporters to march to the Capitol “peacefully and patriotically.” However, chaos erupted as lawmakers began certifying Biden’s victory.
On his first day in office for his second term, Trump issued pardons or commutations for over 1,000 individuals convicted of various offenses related to these events.
