Chief Pamela A. Smith’s Farewell Address

Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith delivered a passionate farewell address, expressing her disdain for critics as she prepares to leave her position at the end of the month amidst allegations of manipulating crime statistics.

In a fiery defense, Chief Smith responded to a congressional report accusing her of pressuring command staff to alter crime data, aiming to present a less crime-ridden image of the city.

“Let’s be really clear about one thing: Never would I, never will I ever compromise my integrity for a few crime numbers,” Chief Smith asserted during her speech, which was attended by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and other members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s leadership.

She emphasized her commitment to integrity and faith in the city, stating, “Never would I compromise my love for God or my 28 years in law enforcement for those who couldn’t stand to be held accountable.”

The audience responded with applause as Chief Smith’s emotional address reached its peak.

The chief’s remarks were directed at findings from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee that claimed she sought to create an illusion of reduced crime “by whatever means necessary.” The report alleged that district commanders faced pressure from Chief Smith to downgrade serious crimes so they would not appear in public reports.

Rep. James Comer, chairman of the committee, called for Chief Smith’s immediate resignation following claims that she coerced staff into reporting artificially low crime figures and fostered a culture of fear within the department.

Mayor Bowser criticized the committee’s interim report as biased and lacking evidence, suggesting it was rushed for political motives.

During her farewell speech, Chief Smith confronted those who had criticized her before lawmakers. “How dare you! How dare you attack my integrity!” she exclaimed passionately from the podium. She concluded with a bold statement directed at her detractors: “F you,” referencing biblical sentiments.

The accusations regarding manipulation of crime data arose from a WRC-TV report alleging that a police commander downgraded offenses post-factum. This issue gained traction during President Trump’s summer campaign against rising crime rates in D.C., where he cited this report while arguing that violent crime was at its lowest in three decades.
