Senator Lummis Will Not Seek Reelection

Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican from Wyoming, revealed on Friday that she will not pursue reelection in 2026, citing a “change of heart.”

The 71-year-old senator was elected to her position in 2020 after serving 12 years in the House of Representatives and holding various roles in state government prior to her congressional career.

In her announcement, Lummis expressed, “In the difficult, exhausting session weeks this fall I’ve come to accept that I do not have six more years in me. I am a devout legislator, but I feel like a sprinter in a marathon. The energy required doesn’t match up.”

Lummis described her time serving Wyoming as a “blessing,” emphasizing the strong working relationships she has built with her fellow state delegation members.

“We all put Wyoming first, which has cemented our cohesive working relationship,” she noted.

The senator expressed gratitude for President Trump’s backing and stated her intention to focus on important legislation during the remainder of her term while helping Republicans maintain control of the Senate in upcoming midterm elections.

Lummis was the only female founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, known for advocating conservative policies within the party.

In the Senate, she has participated in committees addressing banking, housing, commerce, transportation, and environmental matters. She is recognized as an advocate for the cryptocurrency sector and has worked on legislation aimed at establishing regulatory clarity for digital assets.

Given Wyoming’s Republican leanings, Lummis’ seat is expected to remain within GOP control. Republican Representative Harriet Hageman is considered a strong candidate for the position since she currently represents Wyoming’s at-large House seat.

Hageman commended Lummis on social media for her dedication and integrity throughout her 46 years of service to Wyoming. She remarked that Lummis built one of the most distinguished careers in state history and strengthened both Wyoming and the nation through her contributions.
