China’s Military Drills Begin

On Monday, China’s armed forces initiated significant military exercises around Taiwan, aimed at sending strong messages to both Japan and the United States, alongside the self-governing island.

The People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command announced that these operations involve coordinated efforts from various branches of the military, including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. This exercise is named Justice Mission 2025.

The drills encompass an encirclement strategy involving five designated areas. The PLA has stated that these maneuvers include sea-air combat readiness patrols, joint seizure operations, and practice blockades targeting critical ports and regions surrounding the island.

During the first day of these drills, at least 89 PLA warplanes and 28 naval vessels were reported in action.

A striking video released by PLA command showcased numerous missile-launching drones along with underwater and surface attack drones targeting Taiwan.

The timing of these military exercises coincides with rising tensions between China and Japan following remarks from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi indicating Tokyo’s commitment to defend Taiwan against potential aggression. Additionally, a recent $11 billion arms sale from the U.S. to Taiwan has drawn Beijing’s ire as it views this as support for separatist movements.

When questioned about the Chinese drills, President Trump acknowledged his good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping but noted he had not been informed about these specific actions. He expressed skepticism regarding any imminent military assault by China.

The Indo-Pacific Command leader previously indicated that large-scale Chinese military activities near Taiwan are rehearsals for possible invasion scenarios or blockades.

State media footage highlighted various naval assets such as Type 054A frigates and Type 052D guided-missile destroyers maneuvering towards Taiwan from multiple directions. The exercises also featured advanced aircraft like J-20 stealth fighters alongside KJ-500 early warning systems.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry criticized recent U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, asserting that external forces utilizing Taiwan as leverage against China would only embolden pro-independence factions in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s government condemned China’s latest military actions as provocations undermining regional stability. The Defense Ministry emphasized its readiness to defend against any threats while conducting rapid response exercises in light of escalating tensions.
